Ambient Addition
Noah Vawter, a research assistant at MIT's Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has produced a Master's Thesis that's actually worth reading. Rather, it's worth hearing. Mr. Vawter's work, "Ambient Addition: How to Turn Urban Noise into Music," is predicated on the seemingly ubiquitous infiltration of noise pollution in cities. Thus far, Mr. Vawter explains, we've been resigned to iPod solutions--the problem being that iPods can potentially isolate you from other people (as well a detach your from the experience of the city itself).
His solution? Create a device that turns surrounding city noise into music.

The IsolationPod and Alien Coutship
I have felt a bit isolated since getting an iPod two months ago. But who can resist being able to listen to Radiohead virtually whenever and wherever they want?
This Ambient Addition is an interesting idea, only it doesn't sound like music. It sounds more like alien robot courship sound. (This coming from someone who enjoys Thom Yoke's "The Eraser".) I really would want to test it out sometime, only it's on the opposite end of the country.

Good "i"dea
Wow! Sounds like a really good idea. It would be interesting to try for a day, but it's not something that I would do regularly.
I doesn't necessarily have to stand for isolation, there are lots of social ways to use ipods including at parties, in your car and more.
