White House Preferences
Of all the non-WASP Presidential horrors that could be visited on the the White House, the American people feel that an atheist would be the worst, but only a little worse than a homosexual. Catholics, blacks, and Jews: you're all set. Unless this survey simply means that people are still willing to publicly say they hate gays and the godless, but saying you hate black people isn't really ok anymore. In the privacy of the voting booth, though, who knows

Not Surprised
My wife and I are both atheists, and we're very aware of how the majority of Americans embrace religion and disdain "our kind." We feel very much in the minority and are quite careful with our remarks on the subject of religion. I've been told I'm going to hell more than a few times, which is fine with me. I can't understand belief in god (small G intentional) any more than the faithful can understand my lack thereof. They see me as an empty soul, likely to be forever lost, and I just see them as nuts. Frankly, religion scares the crap out of me. If I fear any one trend it is the increasing power of religion in America. Religious fundamentalism in the Middle East is widely condemned, yet what path is America on?
