ISSUE:
It’s no secret. The woeful reading and writing skills of our nation’s youth are cause for great concern. With teachers lacking money and resources, and students lacking initiative and attention, these problems abound.
IDEA:
With one-on-one attention, however, children can make great strides toward levels of reading and writing proficiency—and beyond. 826 chapters offers drop-in tutoring, field trips, workshops, and in-schools programs—all free of charge—for children, classes, and schools with particular interests and particular needs.
IMPACT:
The umbrella of all the individual chapters, 826 National facilitates their work: inspiring students to write and work effectively with teachers, and encouraging young people to produce professional-quality work. It also teaches people how to raise money, how to create a board of directors, and, most importantly, how to rally volunteers to make it all happen.
