GOOD Guide Video: The Two Births of Kim Jong Il: Myth vs Fact
Cooking the History Books
Kim Jong Il is a mysterious dictator. He's alleged to have uttered only one sentence in public, and keeps his hermit kingdom under a veil of megalomaniac lore that manages every aspect of public perception—down to the story of his birth. The truth became murky sometime in the 1980s, when Kim began publicizing a new, more illustrious version. He switched his birth date from 1941 to 1942, making him the same age for two years straight. Then he built a log cabin on the highest mountain in North Korea, proclaiming it his official birthplace and offering guided tours. Which one is real? Try a choose-your-own-birth for the modern dictator.

The Fruit of Isolationism
This shows what a corrupt leader can do with an isolationist society. They have done similar things in the former USSR, present day Cuba, Myanmar, China. Where the effects of globalization has been squelched, the leadership has to potential to make themselves like God himself, exalting themselves to the status of a god that their people worship, but they have pulled the wool over their innocent peoples' eyes. Why can't leaders just think of the value of human life, think of others enough to not kill for ridiculously selfish gain? I get tired of oppressive deceitful regimes lying and killing without real reason.

Challenging "history"
Kudos to GOOD for bringing this up. There are many other governments and regimes that alter history to make it more favorable for themselves and they're not all the typical, demi-god, dictator leaders either. In Japan, they're re-writing history so none of the aggression they enacted during WWII is written for Japanese school children to learn about. In their perfect world, there were no massacres, sex slaves (comfort women as they were called), for all we know, if we didn't make that cheesy Hollywood blockbuster, they'd probably say we imagined Pearl Harbor, too.
