    Politics

response to  Max Joseph, Chris Weller, Eve Marson, and Alan Wilkis's post John McCain

    McCain = Sin of CAIN

For, what is War, but Cain's sin, repeated and magnified thousands of times? God's law is for man not to kill his brothers, for we are indeed our brother's keepers as they are ours.

    Health

response to  Graeme Wood's post Let’s Harvest the Organs of Death-Row Inmates

    Not likely

God's law is for man to "Choose Life". While something like a cop who kills a serial killer who's trying to kill him, or running away to kill another day might be forgivable, killing a helpless human being no matter how evil is murder. Counting the laws and appeals involved, it's cheaper for life in prison, along with the likelihood that innocents are executed...

"It seems to me that his only crime is poverty, but he's yours and I don't want to hear any more about this."

So, it is wrong to harvest organs from condemned, again as wrong as it is to kill them. A society that thinks this is right becomes like China, where executions are performed on demand and the 'guilty' sentenced to die are increasingly done so because of profit motives for 'organ tourists'.

And, really, do you want the "Parts" of a horrible killer? Most are wretched junkies or black people that end up being 'convicted' due to poverty. And once in a while, pure evil manages to get caught alive to be executed. Want to have the BTK killer's heart? (assuming the next step will be life imprisonment cases) There's this neat movie; "Body Parts" on that subject. Really, a lot we don't know about how nerves affect the body, how much of 'us' is in our parts.

response to  Lindsay Utz, Sam Slovick, and Stefan Nadelman's post On Skid Row: Introduction

    America can be disgusting

The Prophet Isa said "That which you do to the least of my creatures, so you do unto me."

America is wealthy beyond the dreams of some kings, yet we have always treated with contempt those our society failed. There is 'welfare', yes, but barely any and that only a remnant of a social measure (new deal) to keep the US from going Communist in the Great Depression.

The City of Sodom was destroyed, not so much for it's perversion but that the final straw was that for all their undeserved wealth they were contemptuous to the unfortunate. I really think if we tweaked the economy so a 'minumum wage job' would (esp with two earners) pay for basic food shelter and allow some luxuries, we'd see our 'homeless' population disappear overnight. Let those who want to work, work and let there be a reward for their efforts. Let them indeed have the opportunity to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and earn pride as they earn their keep. Then, outside of a very minimal truly disabled portion, this would leave only the criminals and the true crazies, and they would be much easier to deal with then. Charity for the former, the law the latter.

    Health

response to  amwin's post Guess Who's Coming As Dinner?

    Healthy animals = healthy food

Most food animals we eat now, if we encountered them hunting we'd shoot 'em to put them out of their misery.

What's needed desperately is a system of labelling that has strict guidelines and offers a spectrum from "Factory Farm" to "True open range" with a few gradients in between. Just like is needed for "Standard Big Ag" to "Hippie Joe's Organic Garden".

A strict range of labels would provide the market niche that the latter, the extremely holistic/organic providers need. This should have strong penalties to prevent the big companies from just slapping an "organic" generic label, raising the price, but selling it at half "Hippie Joe's" minimum price and putting him out of business. If a range of labels is implemented so consumers can choose, then slowly the market will shift from "Big Ag" standard to the middle of the road with the extreme "Organic" end entering a renaissance. Big Ag will then simply shift to having grocery stores accept local produce again and importing luxury/out of season goods.

    response to  andrewprice's post Coultergeist

    Mann Coulter

I just hope Good keeps out ads like this. I really like this magazine, not so much as a "Liberal/Leftist" source but a true intellectual/thinker's source of which so-called 'left' thought is associated with. Needing ads, I'll plug my websites (warped comics) to provide a few bucks.

    Education

response to  Max Joseph, Tom Van Buskirk, and George Langford's post Education

    Only part of the problem

"But sir, I have a master's degree in applied science... Do I really need to sweep..."

Boss - "Oh, I'm sorry, here I'll show you how..."

Frankly there's been too much focus on education in the worst aspect of it; Quantity over quality. The "No Child Left Behind" scam, using hoops to jump through as an excuse to deny federal funding, forcing schools back on the path of being "Route Memorization" factories to hurt the real intellectual and emotional development.

It ends up with just a gauntlet they only put up with, because at the end of it there's supposedly a "College Degree" that will get them a "Good Job". One they'll hate and be bored to tears in, but will "Pay the bills"...

Except, those jobs are going out the door, replaced by "McJobs" that are low paying dead end jobs and even worse than the high paying pointless ones they replaced.

Not that education does not need to be reformed. Most notably in teaching how to think, how to learn, not what to learn and what to think. My parents, despite being "Hippies" read me a lot of ancient Greek stuff, not just the myths but the dramas, the discourses. Simply put, the ancient greek "Acadamy" model, the "Classical Education" is the basis of our western civilization. I'm almost outraged how little most other people seem to know about even the most basic principles of logic and debate.
