response to  Morgan Clendaniel's post American Idol Gives Back

    C'Mon

I actually thought, though for a very good cause, that the show bordered on exploitation. They have to show the 12 year old talking about his dead parents and crying, or the scene where they carry the dying woman to their vehicle to be taken to a hospital, only to announce that she died two days later. I know sometimes we need to see that in order to be moved to care, horrible as that sounds, but I can't help but trust my natural instinct that says it was a self-serving act by a bunch of spoiled celebrities whose greatest satisfaction is not in the good service of humanity but rather in the fulfillment of their own narcissistic fantasies. I don't know. I guess - how else do you do such a show? I certainly can't dispute that they raised a tremendous amount of cash in a very short time. But I'm not willing to praise the celebs for their wonderful humanitarianism.

response to  juketea's post Yes, but.

Wouldn't it be pretty to think so!

Those are all things that can make people unhappy at work when they are absent, but their presence alone will not make people happy. They're just kind of like basic needs and hygiene factors. What makes people happy at work are higher level things like belief you are doing something good and that you have opportunity and empowerment to realize your human potential for creativity and problem solving. That's what most jobs in a modern industrial economy lack. The companies doing great are those that deliver this best - Toyota leaps to mind. As for me, I think I just need a new job! I work at a great place with good benefits, nice environment, etc. I like to say "I haven't quit and they haven't fired me - so must be working out well enough."

    What a shock!!!

I mean, think about it. If work was fun, you'd pay them to do it, not the other way around. I hate my job - and I mean hate. It sucks completely. But I hate poverty even more.

    He's a dead man

Poor Harry. Everyone knows he's not Charles' kid. They're sending him to Iraq to make sure he doesn't come back, and possibly someday become king, or further taint the royal blood with his scandal-ridden genes. Good luck Harry, really, I'm pulling for you man.

    Not Surprised

My wife and I are both atheists, and we're very aware of how the majority of Americans embrace religion and disdain "our kind." We feel very much in the minority and are quite careful with our remarks on the subject of religion. I've been told I'm going to hell more than a few times, which is fine with me. I can't understand belief in god (small G intentional) any more than the faithful can understand my lack thereof. They see me as an empty soul, likely to be forever lost, and I just see them as nuts. Frankly, religion scares the crap out of me. If I fear any one trend it is the increasing power of religion in America. Religious fundamentalism in the Middle East is widely condemned, yet what path is America on?
