Give me a break!
response to GOOD magazine and David Albertson's post Teacher Salaries
As a teacher I'm really tired of uninformed people commenting on how good we have it. We teach 180 days per year. At 10 hrs. per day, incluind grading and instructional preparation, that's 1800 hrs. per year. We also have summer trainings, parent teacher meetings, and community activities like PTO, Community Fairs etc. Now the average work year is 2080 hrs., minus vacations so don't tell me we have so much time off. Teachers work at a lower pay rate than any other college eduacted group plus we have to continue our eduaction so many have Masters degrees and more. In addition there is no other group that has more impact on our future, i.e. our young people. The reality is that the average tax payer, even though they voice support for teachers, is too cheap to pay for an adequate salary.
