advertising lite
response to Max Joseph, Erin Bosworth, and Tom Van Buskirk's post Advertising
anyone who has been to mexico will tell you that the advertising here in the US (and perhaps even the UK) is nothing compared to the developing world. One of the things that struck me most about my time in chile was how agressive and almost limetless (in terms of placement/creativity) the adverstising was. Like our friend muchagainst noted, most people try to keep their eyes downcast in the tube (and really, people do that all over place especially in places like times square where there is so much visual overload that you kind of have to or you will go crazy) but in places like mexico and chile that is really not an option. one thing that i will never forget is an ad campaign by heineken on the subways of santiago. the subways were realtivley new so they they had been designed with ads space in mind and for about a month heineken dressed the some cars entirely in their brand. the cielings, doors and ad spaces on the walls were plastered with photos and decals. even if you closed your eyes you could see green illuminating when you were in the car. rather brilliant actually.
