Obama Military Experience
response to Andrew Price's post Meet The Candidates
I find it hilarious that the right wing adores attacking Obama on his lack of a military record. Can someone please tell me when John McCain gained personal experience on Urbanized, Desert warfare? How is he better able handle an urban, desert conflict than Obama when his personal skill-sets and combat expertise are obsolete by over 30+ years, and geared towards Jungle, artillery based conflicts? Can someone also tell me how he can effectively manage a military force that has spent the largest amount of military funding in history – yet less than 10% of the overall combat force is battle ready? Finally, if many areas in the country of Iraq have been on nearly continuous lockdown for several months to stop the violence, how is John McCain taking leadership of the armed forces going to make us succeed in Iraq?
I keep thinking that World War 2 took less time to win than the time we have been in Iraq. That blows my mind: We beat Hitler in less time that has taken to “secure” Iraq. Wow.
American leadership always has, and always will, rely on a vast network of intelligence advisers, military specialists and other professionals that serve the commander in chief. Although the president may change office, the same professionals who advised George "Whoops" Bush will still be in place when Obama takes office. What I think is very important to have happen is a leader that is able to hold those networks and those professionals responsible for their actions and advice. The Bush administration has been staggeringly inefficient at coaxing results from these professionals, has been entirely too hesitant to admit its mistakes and faults, and has committed the blood of our most prized possession – our kids – into a war we simply cannot win because the “Iraqi” people do not want a government imposed upon them.
Iraq was a nation carved out in the 1940’s. It has several ethnic groups that simply don’t want anything to do with one another. I don’t understand why we need to have one country exist here instead of three – one for each faction. What’s really sad is we were once a nation under siege from a superpower that decided to declare independence from a government we didn’t want imposed on us. Now, we’re trying to do the same thing to Iraq.
I don’t think I’ve ever been more ashamed to be an American – our government is failing in so many ways at the moment that I think we’re on the verge of collapse as a nation. The west coast of the US has been in a chronic drought situation for 30 years, we haven’t bothered investing in a comprehensive energy policy while other nations leave us in the dust. (33% of Germanys electricity is now solar generated). We have millions of senior citizens ready to retire into a broke social security system. We have an enormous brain trust of 20-somethings who now have to compete for white-collar, high paying jobs with Indish and Chinese citizens able to work at 1/20th the cost our kids can. We have a higher incarceration rate than China and North Korea based on a drug “war” that also failed miserably. Our college graduates can’t afford basic housing and are being forced to move back in with their parents after school – they’re lucky if they earn $9 an hour at Wal-Mart – and are expected to buy $300K houses and pay for their parents social security checks too. Our middle class hasn’t had a raise in 30 years, the rich have been huge benefactors of all of the economic growth over the last 20 years. In short: Maybe our government should spend less time talking about and trying to regulate who I decide to have sex with and solve issues that actually matter.
I want accountability. I want to be proud of America again. I want a raise, I want my credit cards paid off, a good job, my neighbors and friends to not die in a senseless conflict with no resolution, a military held accountable for its spending. I want my gay husband to not wake up in the night screaming out of fear he’s going to be shot at. I want a country that recognizes the hypocrisy in asking someone to give their life for their nation but be ashamed of who they are and whom they choose to love. I want a leader that inspires me, shows me that the sun can rise again on America, and that we really can move forward as a nation – and get answers to the things we’ve been needing for decades.
I think the first step is to show we really have changed. Let’s put a black man from a single parent home in the white house….

Military experience can be adaptable to different scenarios. So having some experience could be a better start than none. But either way I don't think it is necessarily a huge advantage/disadvantage as far as what is required for the presidency.
Well for one, Millions died in WWII. The reconstruction went smoother because of the culture and there was actual national unity to build off of in those places.
Iraq has never really been a full scale war. Many mistakes were made after the initial removal of Saddam from power as well that delayed progress. Even if those mistakes hadn't been made, it would still have been difficult enough with the culture and lack of national unity among different ethnic groups.
I agree with you, I just don't understand why they don't divide Iraq up into three "states" at least and maybe keep a federal governing body in place for "Iraq" to make sure the oil revenues are fairly distributed or something like that to help ease ethnic tensions.
Except we're "imposing" democracy on Iraq. They actually have a say now in their government, certainly more than they had under Saddam, yet some of them are choosing violence. Although I agree a foreign force is not the ideal way for a democracy to form, it has to come from within to be truly successful. Hence that is the problem of Iraq.
As for the things you want, I wouldn't count on the government to help you achieve them, I think you're gonna have to help yourself, as well all do (although there's certainly nothing wrong w/ helping each other). Having said that, the government does need to get its act together in protecting citizens from abhorrent credit practices, etc...
From your comments I'm assuming you're in a relationship with a gay man serving in our military? I agree the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is pretty stupid. I have no problem with homosexuals openly serving in the military, nor do I understand why others would either, so long as that individual is fully capable and not interfering with the mission in some way, regardless of what their sexual orientation is.
As for your comments referring to regulating who you choose to love, I'm assuming that's referring to the gay marriage debate? Personally, I don't consider a couple of the same gender to be a marriage, simply because I view marriage as specifically a heterosexual relationship term as it is defined. However, I'm all in favor of providing homosexual couples with the legal recognition of civil unions (which yes, essentially would be like the legal recognition of marriage). I just hate seeing this used as a wedge issue each year when there are so many more important and pressing matters that need to be dealt with, as I'm sure you seem to agree. We just need to settle the issue, allow for civil union legal recognition of gay couples, and put it to rest, seriously. It's such a needless distraction which shouldn't be an issue.

We don't live in a fairy tale!
I,I,I,I,me,me,me..... You certainly want alot of things, that may never come. Life is never going to be perfect, so get over it. Alot of people are never going to except a marriage between 2 men or 2 women, so "get over it"!
We are in a lot of trouble if the only reason you are going to vote for someone is because they are "BLACK"!
You've got to be a Democrat, because having "military experience" does not matter. If I recall, when Kerry was running, it sure did matter. Kerry said"Reporting for duty" in front of a bunch of Democraps, when he was running for office. Your side belittled President George W.Bush, because he was "just" in the National Guard, and all he did was fly "jet airplanes". Now we are back to "military does not count"with your NO'Bama, just like you did with your 1st "Black President", Bill Clinton! LOL!
I am so sick of the brain-washed zombies, like you, who have been brain-washed by the "Leftist"Media, which tells you over, and over, and over, and over, and over again how evil and stupid President Bush is, BUT this country has not been attacked since 911! It is your Demonite Party which has prevented us from drilling for our own oil in this country! China is drilling off the coast of FL, but we can't! Check your facts! Since the Dem's have taken control over the Senate and the Congress, this country has been in a downhill fall. What do you think will happen when your "Empty-Headed"O'BamBam gets into the White House and your Dem's start pulling the strings on Obama, and they spend this country into total destruction! You need to look a little closer at your "Give-A-Way" Party! The Pyramid is not going to last much longer! Soon there will be more people wanting a hand-out, then want to work. So what are you going to do, when all the business's leave this country, because they are tired of being over "TAXED"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barack Hussein Obama
Oh yea. You see this is why Americans have become the suckers of the 21st century. 30 years is better than no years at anything. How, sir can you been so gullable? And why wont you mention his middle name when you speak of Barack Hussein Obama? Now, if I had to choose who would do better in the desert, it would be Barack Hussein Obama. Arabs are used to the sand. Muslims have been hiding and fighting in the sand for centuries. Make no mistake about that. He is and always will be Islam. That, my friends is the great con game of the century. And Americans are too stupid to see it. How can you be so fooled? How? Do you really want a Muslim for our president? They are scamming us just like the pilots who lived among us and then flew plans and dissigrated 3000 of our people. Your memory is short my friend. Barack Hussein Obama is just the next piece in the puzzle. 80% of the world's battles are fought between Islam and X. Why do you suppose that is? Dont make judgements unless you read. Its not an accident that these readicals are out breeding everyone. Breed, teach them to hate - what do you have?
So, if you think Barack Hussein Obama would do better in the sand? you're right. And you are falling for the con.

I noticed that you made no reference to the War of Northern Aggression. I certainly you hope you feel the same way about the subjugated South. Otherwise, you're just another typical DEM whose opinions never hold up under intelligent scrutiny.

Way to split hairs, buddy.
Let me pose you a question. Who would you rather perform a double bypass on your ailing heart? A heart surgeon who graduated 30 years ago and has recieved no continuing education, or your local Wal-Mart Cashier? I truly believe even outdated experience is better than none at all. If no experience was acceptable, I'd have a better job.

disagree
ok first of all the reason we finished WWII was for 2 reasons. One we got in full force towards the end of the war. Second we used an unstoppable force to scare the hell outta all our enemies and allies.
Iraq has had many mistakes, but we will continue to be there forever just as we are in germany, japan, korea, vietnam, cuba, and anywhere else we want to flex our muscle.
Now how this applies to the prez, well Mccain atleast wont lie and say we are leaving. Seems the others will.
I agree i think the oil from iraq should be paying us instead of us paying to be there to help them. I think this shouldve been on the table from the get go.
Gay/straight or purple you shouldnt have to wake up worried that you husband is going to be shot. But is that a presidental problem or a society problem?
I totally agree with you on the local job problems...i think the president/congress that decides to close the door and fix the inside first while cleaning up the outside second will be the only solution to "our" problems!
quote " i think the first step is to show we really have changed. Let's put a black man from a single parent home in the white house...."
my question is why do you think this is the solution? being black/ white/ single parent families are the solution? Hell if we could solve the single parent problems in this nation i think crime rate would drop.... intelligence would rise and a stronger nation we would be. Im from a broken single parent family....and though i think im ok...i wouldve gave anything for it to been a full family.
Obama/ Mccain/ and all the others have one thing in mind. Them. If you believe otherwise you will see in 4 to 8 years.

OK...
I think this is a well thought out intelligently supported post. And I agree, there are a lot of problems in our own country to be solved. Emmalee3, you're talking semantics (I,I,I...) the post is about what fears and problems many people have in this country. Getting caught up in how it is stated is a convenient deterrent.
It's interesting how our current government is expecting Iraq to comply with their ideas of what Iraq's government should be when indeed the different cultures there should be respected but aren't - and the proponents of this practice (as you see from some of the posts below) are making abominable assumptions such as "hinesbrad must be gay", Obama's middle name "Hussein" must mean something is awry with him and all "Muslims" have it in for us. Come on! Educating oneself opens up the mind and apparently there are a lot of closed minds around here.
