Succinct, but strong. You're on your way to making a companion piece to the excellent Control Room.

response to JohnCommoner's post What a shock!!!
Fair enough, Joe--to a limited extent. Just because you're paid to provide a service doesn't mean you have to dread getting up to do it every day. Do a similar study in Europe, where it's not as if everyone has their dream job, and I suspect you'd get much rosier answers. Why? Better benefits, workplace environments, respect, etc. Work may have to be work, but it doesn't have to be a nightmare.

response to Patrick James's post Bad Astronaut
Nasa announced they're going to take another look at their astronaut screening. Sounds like it's a good idea. Even when Heinlein wrote Stranger in a Strange Land, he could predict that humans are humans in a lot of ways unless they're on the ground, in orbit, or on Mars.

response to Patrick James's post Break A Leg, Off
But Nip/Tuck had a couple of episodes where a patient wanted the plastic surgeons to remove his leg. He was willing to do it himself, but preferred good surgery. They sensationalized the whole thing, of course, made it a big stand-off, but comparing the character's description of his experience to the Guardian description, they (remarkably) resisted the temptation to turn it into a sexual fetish or otherwise fictionalize it.
