response to BoomerUSNA90's post Duty, Honor, Country
I agree with Boomer. McCain definitely understands duty. He also would supplement drilling for oil with nuclear, wind, solar and other energy sources. For this reason alone, he would give us a better chance to recover economically.
It's pathetic that this country cannot come up with a candidate with strong character, high moral standards (honesty), a keen sense of duty, an understanding of market economies - AND at least a little charisma or leadership.
However, giving Obama the chance to take us further down the path of socialism/collectivism would be DISASTROUS to our economy, our employers (large and small businesses) and our stock markets, that must thrive in order to keep us from becoming a former world power and a rapidly declining 3rd world country.
I just returned from Egypt, where they LOVE Obama. That country is pathetic. It is so sad.
We could end up the same way.
We pay big money to have elected representatives (Senate & House) who are supposed to anticipate future problems, think about what to do about them and take action.
Unfortunately, they have been too busy trying to use other people's money (ours) to buy votes and stay in power. They failed to see the energy crisis coming - since the 1970's. Now they are saying "more drilling won't help for 5 years." What about the last 5 years when the 60 vote requirement in the Senate prevented the former Republican majority (less than 60) from voting for more drilling each time they brought it up.
When the Democrats took control of Congress, gas was $2.00 a gallon, now it has gone up 110% since they got in.
Obama would only make it worse.
If people can't buy gas, they can't work. If they can't work, they will starve - and the economy will collapse.
We need to stop all wasteful earmarks, pork barrel spending, and non-essential expenses (anything not related to defense or keeping people alive).
We are heading toward becoming a 3rd world country.

I agree with JVA that oil has inherent flaws and we must look to future alternatives. Petroleum products are bad for the planet.
On the other hand, if we have control over how oil is drilled (responsibly, using very careful new technology), and if we can supply our own needs, then we can mitigate the damage done in the drilling process. We can also return the land (and sea) to a better state afterward than most other countries can. Do you really think that Venezuela and Iran care more about protecting the environment than we do? If we are the biggest petroleum consumer, and if we insist that we will only use "responsibly produced oil," then we should drill our own.
We use 5 times more oil than any other nation, but we produce 25 times more with that oil than any other nation. I.e. - we are the most efficient consumers as well as the most efficient producers.
We should return to the lead, in oil, in solar, in wind, in coal, in oil shale, nuclear and in all other forms of energy.
We should demand that all our energy is as efficient as it can be, and that we control how it is produced and the emissions it makes by our own (high) standards.
If we are the biggest market, then why can't we make a difference?
Without energy (including all forms), we will end up without power for our computers (including BLOGS like this one), lights, or jobs.
Lets bring all our power needs (including oil) back into our own hands.
