    Business & Money

response to  Zach Dundas's post Boomtown

    Oil is interesting

While there are a vast number of people who are of the opinion that oil and the people who process and sell it are Satanic, and there may be some truth to that. But, just like anything in life, oil provides opportunity. It is going to change things, which is always scary, and ofttimes offensive to some, but if people are capable and willing to be creative with the way they live, there are endless possibilities for improvement. And what about the destruction of community? Developing and sustaining community always requires sacrifice. It demands the attention of people who value the community more than their own personal gain. These people making millions from piping oil off their land will have to invest in the community, and with wisdom, they can make their towns and cities thrive.

Please don't misunderstand. I don't think America's (or China's... or the rest of the world's) dependency on oil is in any way a good thing. I'm certainly in favor of sustainable living, and fossils are the opposite of that. I am also a realist and an opportunist, which means I understand that we cannot change the system in a day, so if there is a enormous deposit of oil under American soil, I'm glad we're using it instead of importing crude from overseas. Especially if we can build new refineries in parts of the country that could benefit from the influx of money.

We might as well make the best we can with what we have. So, while technology develops more eco-friendly renewable energy sources, we do our best to liberate ourselves from our bondage to foreign oil.

    Health

response to  Siobhan OConnor and Rob Di Ieso's post Playing Doctor

    Unfortunate

It is unfortunate to me that the pro-life v. pro-choice debate has lost any semblance of intelligence it may have had. This article has no more credibility than the non-medical CPCs that it misrepresents. The real problem with this debate is that people from both sides have forgotten that their opponents are people, people who (i believe) are trying to do what they believe is right. It's easy for me to see that someone who believes that abortion is murder would resort to whatever means in order to save the life of an unborn child. It's also easy for me to see how someone who believes in the right of a woman to choose would view this as coercive and misleading.

What i personally don't understand is how offended many pro-choice people get when people decide not to have abortions. That seems inconsistent to me.

i would like to see a study on how many women wanted to have an abortion, were convinced to do otherwise, and are now happy with their decision. i think a study like this would really shed some light on this whole discussion.

    Environment

response to  Corey Binns and Grant Delin's post Paper not Plastic

    A Greener Politic

i am glad that there are people in politics who are trying to make a difference environmentally. It seems so often you hear about the individual citizen trying to make a difference, and that is good, and i applaud it, but the truth of the matter is that the general population is lazy and apathetic, myself not excluded. i feel as though a great deal more will be accomplished when we start creating legislature that requires change in behavior.

    This is an excellent start.

    Culture

response to  Michaelangelo Matos and Brian Rea's post Michaelangelo Matos on the 1990s Music Renaissance

    Life Cycles

i've said for years that culture travels in a cyclical manner. Usually it is represented by fashion, television, movies, and music.

i liked this piece because it actually goes into a little depth on the music of the early 90s... and the fact that i just insinuated that music in the early 90s had depth is interesting enough. But, you know, it did.

i'm glad we're getting to the point where we are far enough removed to be able to look back with a little nostalgia and interest. Even more than that, however, i am glad that we are trying to better ourselves, to learn from the decades in which many of grew up.

    Living

    response to  ryanblain's post Why?

    Deserving?

Since when do we give grace based on how good people are? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

I know Rev. Falwell made a lot of people angry... he made me angry. But, he needs grace as much as anyone.

It isn't our place to condemn, even if Falwell made a career of condemnation. Otherwise, are we any better than he?

    Culture

response to  Ben Hales and Aaron Dana's post Ben Hales on Music

    Album Art

i have, as a music listener, always tried to appreciate the organization of songs on an album as part of the creative process. i do not claim to be a musician or songwriter, but that does not make me less qualified to appreciate good music. And, as with many things in life, good music tells a story. It certainly seems that part of any good story, be it literature or otherwise, is dependent upon its context. In the same way, the way one song leads into another on an album should be utilized to help communicate the overarching message of the album, whatever that may be.

By the way, i love Aqualung. His music always tells me stories.
